How to prepare for the 3G network switch off

2 Minutes Read
The 3G network has been a reliable and widely available mobile technology for more than two decades, enabling voice calls, text messages, and internet access on millions of devices across Australia. However, as the demand for faster and more advanced mobile services grows, the 3G network is reaching its end of life and will be gradually switched off by the major mobile network operators.

This means that if you are still using a 3G-only device or SIM card, you will need to upgrade to a 4G or 5G compatible device or SIM card before the switch off date to avoid losing your mobile service. In this blog post, we will explain what the 3G switch off means for you and how Matrium Technologies can help you make a smooth transition to the next generation of mobile technology.

What is the 3G switch off and why is it happening?

The 3G switch off is the process of shutting down the 3G network infrastructure and reallocating the spectrum to the 4G and 5G networks. This will allow the mobile network operators to provide faster, more reliable, and more efficient mobile services to their customers, as well as to support new applications and innovations such as the Internet of Things, smart cities, and autonomous vehicles.

The 3G switch off is happening because the 3G network is no longer able to meet the increasing demand for data and connectivity, and is becoming more costly and difficult to maintain and operate. By switching off the 3G network, the mobile network operators can free up valuable spectrum and resources to improve and expand their 4G and 5G networks, which offer superior performance, capacity, and coverage.

When is the 3G switch off happening and who is affected?

The 3G switch off timeline varies depending on the mobile network operator and the location. Telstra recently announced that it will delay its 3G network switch off until 31 August 2024. Optus is planning to switch off its 3G network from 1 September 2024. TPG Telecom/Vodafone has already switched off its 3G network.

The 3G switch off will affect anyone who is still using a 3G-only device or SIM card, or who is in an area where there is no 4G or 5G coverage. This includes some older smartphones, feature phones, tablets, mobile broadband devices, and fixed wireless devices. If you are affected by the 3G switch off, you will lose your ability to make and receive voice calls, send and receive text messages, and access the internet on your device.

How to check if you are affected by the 3G switch off and what to do next?

There are a number of ways you can check if you are affected by the 3G switch off:

  • Text “3” to the number ‘3498’ to check if your mobile phone will be affected by the 3G closure
  • Enter your IMEI into the ‘check-my-device’ tool here and see if your mobile phone will be affected
  • Contact your mobile service provider and ask them about your device and SIM card compatibility and the switch off dates for your area. If you are unsure of your service provider please use the following link here
  • You can also check your device settings and look for the network indicator on your screen. If you see> 3G, UMTS, or HSPA, it means you are using the 3G network and you will need to upgrade. If you see > 4G, LTE, or 5G, it means you are using the 4G or 5G network and you are not affected by the switch off.

If you are affected by the 3G switch off, you will need to take urgent action to remain connected. You will need to upgrade to a 4G or 5G compatible device or SIM card before the switch off date for your area. You can choose from a wide range of devices and plans that suit your needs and budget, please note Financial Hardship packages may also be available with your Service Provider.
